Grey‐breasted spiderhunter

(Arachnothera modesta)

Description:
Spiderhunters and sunbirds belong to the same family of passerine birds, Nectariniidae. The grey‐breasted spiderhunter is found in South East Asia, and is bright olive green above, paler olive‐ greyish below and has narrow dark streaks on its throat and chest. They rarely occur in flocks, and are more likely to be seen alone or in a pair of two.

Diet:
Like all members of the Nectariniidae family, spiderhunters feed on nectar and small insects. The spiderhunter has the ability to catch spiders from the middle of their net, which explains where it got its name from. They are often observed foraging in lower story, particularly around banana plants.

Habitat:
They live in broadleaved evergreen forests, secondary growth and also in gardens and human settlement. Sometimes they also occupy cultivated areas.

Reproduction:
Spiderhunters breed in the wet season, as then more insect prey is available than in the dry season. This helps them to find enough food for their offspring. They build well camouflaged nests, which are enclosed and suspended in trees or shrubs – often spider webs are used as construction material. The female lays up to four eggs and after they hatched, both male and female will take care of the offspring.
