Description:
The blue‐winged pitta is a colorful songbird found in Australia and South East Asia. It displays a black head, white chin and bluff body. Its wings are blue, hence its name, and also the tip of the tail is a deep violet‐blue color. It is often seen singing on top of tall trees.
Due to its colorful appearance the blue‐winged pitta has won the title “Little Forest Angel”.
Diet:
The pitta eats mostly worms and insects, which it is hunting on the ground or from low branches. Also hard shelled snails belong to its diet.
Habitat:
The blue‐winged pitta inhabits subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests like evergreen and mixed deciduous forests, secondary growth and bamboo. During migration it will also visit parks, gardens and mangroves.
Reproduction:
Pittas build untidy spherical nests, typically on the ground. The nests are situated between tree roots and are always close to a water source. The female lays around five eggs and the incubation time is 16 days. Both male and female will incubate the eggs and subsequently take care of the offspring.
